Karoliina Pertamo

Hi, I’m Karoliina Pertamo! I studied fine arts in Finland and France and ended up as an illustrator in 2009. I do book and magazine illustrations for readers of all ages, as well as cards, posters and anything else that needs imagery.

I am fluent in French and English, and with my slightly broken Swedish I have also managed to illustrate books in Swedish.

Finalist for the Rudolf Koivu Prize 2012, Nordic Council of Minister’s Children's and Young People's Literature Prize 2014, Finlandia Junior nomination 2014 and 2015, Runeberg Junior nomination for two books in 2020. One of Finland's representatives at the Bratislava Illustration Biennale for several years.

In book illustrations, I emphasize atmosphere through the use of color, for example.
In addition to books, the faster-paced magazine illustrations inspire me to explore new subjects and to look for the right way to present the subject in question. I have a good knowledge of nature and am a passionate gardener and plot farmer.

"I have collaborated with Karoliina twice, on the brochure material and on the illustration for the nature trail. I really like Karoliina's style – the fairytale-like beautiful, yet realistic pictures fit the nature themes very well! Karoliina is easy to work with, and she understood from the first word what kind of image I was looking for."

– Eeva-Liisa Korpela, Conservation Expert, WWF Finland

"We have been working with Karoliina on illustrations for several years now, always smoothly and reliably. She has inquired about our wishes for the conceptual design and as the work has progressed, listened to our suggestions. The aim has often been the versatility and longevity of the illustrations. Illustration projects with very different themes have been handled quickly and successfully from start to finish, and the illustrations have received a delightfully positive response."
