Terhi Adler
Hi! I'm Terhi Adler, an illustrator, graphic designer and cartoonist from Helsinki.
I am quite versatile and have done pattern design, murals, mobile illustrations and three dimensional work in various techniques. In client projects I carefully consider the best realization for the work. I always research the subject and master even large scale projects. I also work on my own grant projects.
Storytelling is in my blood and I like to get to the bottom of things. I'm fascinated by mysticism, nature, the human mind and its quirks. I love cats, humor and humanity!
I graduated from Aalto University with a Master of Arts 2021 (Visual Narrative, Visual Communication Design) and a Bachelor of Arts 2018 (Graphic Design). My studies also included minors in PatternLab Texture Design and Comics Design, courses in Packaging Design as well as Animation at Tama Art University, Japan.
I speak Finnish and English.
Ask me to work with you on a book project! I've done a lot of publication design and book covers. I love print, but you can also hire me to create moving gif illustrations or patterns.
I mostly work digitally with a drawing board and Adobe software or Procreate – as a graphic designer, I've got computer skills covered. I also like to draw and paint on paper.
My clients include Parkko Publishing, Aalto University, Helsinki Urban Art, UN Global Pulse, Into Publishing, festivals such as Flow, Querelle and Helsinki Festival, magazines such as Tulva, Kuti, Aino, Zelda, Aalto University Magazine, Astra, Super and Amnesty, in pattern design Nanso and Lekolar.

Capsule Wardrobe / Aalto Arts
As a part of Helsinki Design Week 2022 looking into sustainability in the clothing industry, Aalto Arts showcased the idea of a capsule wardrobe. It means that you own only a few essential clothes of good quality, and all your outfits are arranged by mixing from them. Who says you couldn’t still include a few wild cards!

Herbarium Mysticum / My project
Many aren’t aware that you can find Devil’s Apple in the Finnish nature, or that the water in a vase full of Forest Anemone is poisonous to drink. In my project I look into the old beliefs and habits around plants, from banishing bad spirits to love potions.
I’m writing and illustrating a book about the poisonous, medicinal, and even hallucinogenic plants of Finland. The term ”witch” tends to have a bad connotation, although they have usually been folk healers with knowledge on plant ingredients. For the project I am researching old spells, recipies and habits regarding magic plants.
The illustrations are made with gouache and pastel pencils on A2 sized paper.
The originals have been on display in Galleria Sarjakuvakeskus, café Roihuvuoren Rio, Grafia ry’s Luonnos-tila and Kolin Ryynänen.

WHATEVER / My project
WHATEVER is a multifaceted comics project. I have self-published some zines and participated in anthologies with traditional comics. I also experimented with three-dimensional comics: my thesis for Aalto University (2021) is about it, and the exhibition has been showcased in various galleries in Southern Finland (2020–21), and was also one of the main exhibitions in Fumetto comics festival in Luzern, Switzerland in Spring 2023. I have also been developing a Whatever animation.
The stories revolve around three roommates who battle with everyday worries (the economy, global warming, mental health problems) and the irrationality of relationships – spiked with humour and magical realism.

Poetry books / Publishing house Parkko
We have made translated poem books in Finnish with Parkko since 2018. I have been in charge of the visual design and tried to tend to the needs of the translators. In poetry the translator has an important role, an in a sense writes the whole poem anew. That’s why these books feel like their babies, too.
The books come in a couple of different sets, which means also difference in visual styles. The original art is made by painting with ink.

Epic ladies pop up cards / oma projekti
Eeppiset naiset pop-up-kortit syntyivät kiinnostuksesta Suomen muinaisuskonnon naisjumaluuksiin.
